Between the Folds chronicles the stories of ten fine artists and intrepid theoretical scientists who have abandoned careers and scoffed at hard–earned graduate degrees—all to forge unconventional lives as modern–day paperfolders.
Between the Folds, premiered on PBS’s Independent Lens in December 2009, and was re-broadcast the following season. It received a Peabody Award in 2010. Between the Folds has been translated into more than ten languages and broadcast in dozens of countries, on networks including NHK, CBC, ABC, EBS, NRK, SF, SVT, Al Jazeera, and Al Hurra. It screened at more than 45 international film festivals and was recognized with numerous audience and jury awards.

One of artists in Between the Folds that became a close friend was French paperfolder Eric Joisel. In October 2010, he passed away at the age of 54 from lung cancer. It was the experience of assisting The New York Times in preparing his obituary - almost as though I was following him - which led me to my current project about the obituaries at The New York Times.
I describe that experience, posted here, on the OBIT project's webpage. I also wrote a lengthier piece for PBS on the loss of Eric as an artist, posted here, on the Between the Folds webpage.
Below are outtakes from the footage I shot with Eric in his home studio – clips not seen in the film.
